Website Redesign Without Losing Your Google Rankings

Why redesigns lose search traffic and the step-by-step inventory, redirect and launch checklist that keeps your rankings and enquiries intact.

A new website should bring in more business than the old one. Yet one of the most common stories in web development is the opposite: a beautiful redesign launches, and within weeks the enquiries dry up because the site has dropped out of Google.

It is almost always preventable. Rankings are rarely lost because of the new design itself. They are lost because of what was removed, renamed or broken during the move.

Why Redesigns Lose Rankings

  • Pages disappear. Old pages that ranked for valuable searches are deleted or merged without a plan.
  • Addresses change without redirects. Every old link, bookmark and search result now leads to an error page.
  • Content gets cut. The new design looks cleaner because the text that Google relied on has been removed.
  • Titles and descriptions are reset to generic placeholders.
  • The new site is slower, especially on phones.
  • The staging site blocked search engines, and that setting was carried into the live site by accident.

Before You Change Anything: Take an Inventory

  1. List every page on the current site, including blog posts and old landing pages.
  2. Find out which pages bring traffic and enquiries. Use your analytics and Google Search Console.
  3. Record the searches each important page ranks for.
  4. Note which pages other websites link to. Those links carry authority you do not want to lose.

This list becomes the map for the whole project. Every valuable page on it must either survive or be redirected to its closest replacement.

During the Build

Keep the content that ranks. Improve it, restructure it, design it beautifully, but do not delete the substance that answers what people search for.

Keep addresses where possible. If a page can keep its URL, keep it. If it must change, plan a permanent (301) redirect from the old address to the new one.

Write proper titles and descriptions for every page, based on the searches it should win.

Build for speed. Fast pages on a mid-range phone are both a ranking factor and a conversion factor. Size images properly and avoid heavy page-builders.

Keep the structure clear. Each service or product gets its own page that can rank on its own, rather than one long page covering everything.

Launch Day Checklist

  • All redirects are in place and tested.
  • Search engines are allowed to index the live site.
  • The sitemap is updated and submitted in Google Search Console.
  • Analytics and conversion tracking are working on the new site.
  • Contact forms, WhatsApp buttons and phone links actually work.
  • Key pages have been checked on real phones.

After Launch: Watch Closely

For the first few weeks, check Search Console regularly for errors, pages that are not being indexed and drops in impressions. Small dips after a move are normal while Google re-reads the site. Large or lasting drops usually point to a missing redirect or removed content, and they can be fixed quickly if caught early.

A Redesign Is Also an Opportunity

Done properly, a redesign is a chance to improve rankings, not just protect them:

  • give each service its own focused page,
  • answer the questions customers actually ask,
  • fix technical problems the old site had,
  • make every page lead clearly to an enquiry.

At Teebtek we treat search as part of the build rather than an afterthought. Every page is planned around the searches it should win and the one action it should drive, before design starts.

If you are planning a new website and worried about what happens to your current traffic, we can audit what you have, show you what must be protected and plan the move so the new site starts stronger than the old one.
